(Various Manufacturers)  A commonly used antibiotic that is very effective against common bacteria in the horse. Penicillin G is the intramuscular form of penicillin.  It must be used with caution as it can cause a severe procaine reaction if given with incorrect technique.   We will only dispense this product to clients that can confidently give this injection and are aware of the risks.  For other clients, we suggest oral sulfa instead.  See “Intramuscular Injections: Thal Equine Client Handout” for more information. (Various Manufacturers).  This is the most commonly used oral antibiotic in our practice, and it is very inexpensive.  Generally, it is a safe medication when used appropriately.  But as with any antibiotic, horses can get diarrhea, which can be life-threatening.   The tablets dissolve quickly in water and can be given orally in a syringe.  See “Giving Your Horse Oral Medications: Thal Equine Client Handout” for more details.  Sold by prescription only to Thal Equine clients.
